How to find a job at a law firm as a paralegal student?

Question by freakette85: How to find a job at a law firm as a paralegal student?
I’m currently a paralegal student and want to get some experience in a law firm. Do they ever hire paralegal students to help with cases or anything? Or are the only jobs available the ones that are posted online or in the newspaper?

How would I go about looking for a job at a law firm that doesn’t have a job ad?
I’m not looking for a paralegal position, I’m just looking for some type of experience in a law firm to get my foot in the door.

Answer by intuitivereadings1962
You can call the office administrator directly by calling individual law firms from the phone book and asking for the administrator or office manager. They do hire paralegal students, but often on a more secretarial basis. You can also try to get jobs through employment or temp agencies, which can also be found in the phone book or yellow pages online.

Good luck to you. If you like to do research, stress that aspect of your career.

Help on business law question?

Question by mikeym_84: Help on business law question?
Jurisdiction. Marya Callais, a citizen of Florida, was walking near a busy street in Tallahassee one day when a large cart flew of a passing truck and hit her, resulting in numerous injures to Callais. She incurred a great deal of pain and suffering plus numerous medical expenses, and she could not work for 6 months. She wishes to sue the trucking firm for $ 300,000 in damages. The firm’s headquartes are in Georgia, although the company does business in florida. In what court may Callais bring suit-a Florida state court, a Georgia state court, or Federal court? What factors might influence her decision?

Best answer:

Answer by faulty_cortex
The incident occured in Florida, so the suit should be filed there. The company must respond no matter where the suit is filed.

questions about georgia open carry laws?

Question by Joe: questions about georgia open carry laws?
i might move to georgia in a couple months from massachusetts, the state with one of the strictest gun laws. i am a firm believer in the right to bear arms and that’s one of the things i like about moving there but i have some questions about open carry laws there. first of all, what is the age to open carry? i’m 19 years old with no criminal record. also, they say you can’t carry in public gatherings but does that mean if i’m at a mall or something and i see a large group of people standing around, does that mean i need to dearm before i go into the crowd? i’ve read about the laws on several websites and can’t get a clear explanation for it. can someone like give me a clearer explanation for it? thanks in advance.

Open carry? Do you mean concealed carry?

Is it illegal for a law firm to charge clients for a volunteers time?

law firm marketing
by D.C.Atty

Question by qweezyq: Is it illegal for a law firm to charge clients for a volunteers time?
Due to the job market, I may volunteer at a law firm to keep my resume fresh and in hopes that I prove my worth to the firm and they hire me. If I do this, is it legal for the law firm to bill clients for my time while not paying me?

Best answer:

Answer by Comrade Snarkovich
They can charge for whatever they want. I had an internship for a consulting firm where I made about $ 20/hour. The firm charged their clients $ 75/hour for the hours I worked though. Even if they didn’t give all that money to me there were other fixed costs associated with the work I was doing (computer, desk, network connection, subscriptions to various websites and databases, etc)

Q&A: When to start a family (after law school)?

family law firm
by lisby1

Question by Amanda: When to start a family (after law school)?
I’m thinking about going to law school after I graduate. I will gradutate from college in May(I’ll be barely 22) then would go directly to law school & graduate from there when I’m around 25. I’m conflicted about when I would start a family if I did this. I plan on getting married after college and would likely not start a family until after law school. I know that the first few years after law school are tough; however, I’m not planning on being a big time lawyer or even a trial lawyer. I’m interested in the behind-the-scenes research area & would likely work at a business or small firm near where I live. So even though it would still be tough it won’t be quite as cut throat as what I’ve been hearing major firms in NYC are like LOL. Do you think it is possible to have a family a few years after law school? My question is mainly for lawyers or people with direct experience not second hand info about someone who did something and it was hard :)

You have some options to get your foot in the door. You could continue your education and become certified as a Paralegal. many schools offer a course for a few months that would suffice. You could work as a legal secretary, or look into getting licensed as an investigator in your state.

The vast majority of law firms will want some sort of certification to be an investigator, or a paralegal.

Check the local classifieds, or find a local lawyer who may be willing to talk to you about options for a while. Each state will have it’s own rules about licensing and such, so a local opinion would benefit you greatly.

What type of salary increase should I expect?

Question by Nikki O: What type of salary increase should I expect?
I started as the receptionist at a Law firm in Cleveland, OH on August 29th of this year. It is a decent size firm-25 or so employees. After only a short time, the legal assistants started to give me a lot of their overflow work. I was catching on qucikly and doing things accurately and in a timley fashon. They loved me. I have since been promoted. They are going to train me to be a probate legal assistant. They started me out at 25k a year as the receptionist. When I accepted the promotion they told me I would be getting a raise, they said they didn’t know how much yet though. The average salary for the position in the Cleveland area (between 0-2 years experience) is between 31k and 38k a year. In your opinion, what do you think i should expect to make?
The new receptionist is to start in a week. They bought me a procedure manual at $ 100. They will be sending me to a few seminars. Paying for me to get my notary. I will be working for two of our ten attorneys.

Answer by ryan c
Since it’s a new job, ask for at least 30. If they say an average increase is 5%, tell them that is if you are in the sme job.

A Divorce of a Traveling Soldier?

Question by Pavok: A Divorce of a Traveling Soldier?
I am a soldier in the US Army and am currently going to be going through a divorce but we have a minor situation. I am trying to find out where our Jurisdiction Lies. I am Currently stationed in germany and We were married in Ft Riley KS. As well our daughter was born in the same place. I moved to Ft Stewart GA and then Got deployed in total with my wife she and I lived there roughly 1.5 years. Her Home of Record is St Louis and mine is Louisville… So who would our jurisdiction fall under. And At that point is there a court there that would serve a proxy or not? We have only been in Germany for 4 months and the military does not do divorces only seperations. Does anyone have any info on a Law Firm that could help us.

Best answer:

Answer by Just me
you file where you are a resident. In all that mess you provided you did now state where you home of record was.. only hers. In the military you have to have a state that you pay taxes to, or would if they had taxes. What is that state?
ok nm i just saw that you put a city… not a state..
so that would be where you file.

Question by Mike: How much money to tax lawyers make. Im trying to decide between that and an anesteologist because i cando both
Im trying to decide between that and being an anesteologist. im was thinkin about anesteologist but i like dressin up and alot of other stuff about tax lawyers so im tryna figure out how much it pays cuz that will decide for me cuzz i like alot of things about both.

Answer by Jurassic Park Dino
You just really need to follow your gut about what you’re really interested in and what is the most important to you. That is very important in the long run. Every profession has its own pros and cons. Look around who is making a good money and living well …? Can’t you see doctors and lawyers among them? However your question sounds somewhat very shallow. I am sorry saying this, but if you like dressing up etc., go for it. Finally, the decision is yours. Good Luck.
